Asia Cup 2022: Afghanistan beat Bangladesh by seven wickets in Super Four


Sharjah, August 31 (SO News / Agency) Thanks to the brilliant innings of Najibullah Zadran (43 not out) and Ibrahim Zadran (42 not out), Afghanistan defeated Bangladesh by seven wickets in the Asia Cup 2022 Super- 4. Afghanistan is the first team to reach Super 4.

Bangladesh had set Afghanistan a tough target of 128 runs on a slow wicket but Afghanistan got it with nine balls to spare. Bangladesh won the toss and decided to bat but this decision was not in their interest and Afghanistan Once again trapped the opposing team in their spin.

Mujibur Rehman sent Mohammad Naeem (06), Inamul Haque (05) and captain Shakib Al Hasan (11) to the pavilion within 24 runs. Soon after, Rashid Khan took the lead and dismissed wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim for the score of one run. Afif Hussain (12) tried to manage the team along with Mahmudullah, but Rashid Khan dismissed him for 53 runs and sent half of the Bangladesh team back to the pavilion. Mahmudullah also fell prey to Rashid by playing a memorable innings of 25 runs off 27 balls.

Bangladesh’s biggest partnership was 38 runs for the seventh wicket between Mossadegh and Mehdi Hasan. Mossadegh played a commendable innings of 48 off 31, which included four fours and a six, while Mehdi Hasan scored 14 (12) before being run out.

It was not easy for Afghanistan to achieve the target of 128 runs. Captain Shakib, who led the Bangladesh bowling, dismissed Rahmanullah Garbaz (11) in the fifth over to give his team their first win.
Hazratullah Zazai and Ibrahim put on a 30-run partnership after Garbaz was dismissed. Zazai scored 23 runs off 26 balls before being dismissed. Shortly after Zazai, captain Muhammad Nabi (08) was also dismissed and Afghanistan’s runs came to a halt.

The required run rate went beyond 10 thanks to cautious Bangladeshi bowling. Afghanistan needed 42 runs in the last four overs but Najeebullah added 17 runs with the help of two sixes off Mustafizur Rahman in the 17th over. After that, Afghanistan did not look back and the Ibrahim-Najeebullah duo ended the match in 18.3 overs.

Ibrahim played a sensational innings of 42 runs off 41 balls, Najeebullah scored 43 runs off 17 balls at a strike rate of 252.94 and ended the match by hitting Mossadegh for a six.

With this win, Afghanistan have booked a place in the Super 4 where they will face either Sri Lanka or Bangladesh. It should be noted that Mohammad Nabi’s team has defeated Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the first match of Asia Cup 2022 as well.
