Gotbaya Rajpakshe escaped from Sri Lanka, left for Thailand from Singapore, got conditional asylum for 90 days

Colombo, August 11 (SO News/Agency) Sri Lanka’s ousted President Gotabaya Rajapaksa left Singapore for Thailand after his short-term travel pass expired on Thursday. According to a media report, it has been reported that Rajpakshe boarded a plane from Singapore to Bangkok. Thailand had confirmed a day earlier that it had received a request from the current Sri Lankan government to travel to Gotabaya. In response to media queries, the Singapore Immigration and Checkpoints Authority said Rajpaksha left Singapore on Thursday, The Straits Times reported.

It should be noted that Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha on Wednesday confirmed the 73-year-old Sri Lankan leader’s temporary visit to Thailand for moral reasons. It also said that Rajpakshe had promised not to engage in political activities in the state during her search for permanent asylum. Rajapakse fled Sri Lanka and arrived in Singapore in July amid anti-government protests. He is taking refuge in Thailand as his Singapore visa expired on Thursday.

Rajpakshe fled from here to Singapore after boarding a flight to Maldives on July 13. From here he announced his resignation. The Bangkok Post newspaper quoted Prayut as saying that this is a moral issue. We have promised that this is a temporary accommodation. No (political) activities will be allowed and this will help them find a country to take refuge. The report said Foreign Minister Don Parmadani said the ousted president could stay in Thailand for up to 90 days, as he was still a diplomatic passport holder.
