Birmingham, August 7 (SO News / Agency) The Indian women’s hockey team won the Commonwealth Games medal after 16 years after defeating New Zealand in a shootout at the Commonwealth Games 2022. India beat New Zealand 1–1 (2–1 in a shootout) to win the bronze medal in the bronze medal match. Salima Tete (29) scored the only goal for India, while Olivia (59′) scored for the Kiwis. Sonika and Navneet scored for India in the shootout.
In the first quarter of the match, India dominated New Zealand, but the Kiwi goalkeeper did not allow India to open the account. India continued to attack in the second quarter and two minutes before half-time, Salima Tate put the ball into the net to give India a 1-0 lead.
In the third quarter of the match, New Zealand was eager to level the match. New Zealand scored a goal with just two minutes left in the third quarter, but it was disallowed after a video referral by India.
India were leading 1-0 in the 58th minute of the match and an arm’s length away from a bronze medal when Lalramsyamy was shown a yellow card, leaving only 10 Indians on the field. Thanks to more players, New Zealand made it into the Indian half. Here the Kiwis got first a penalty corner and then a penalty stroke, which New Zealand used to level the score at 1-1.
India were defeated by Australia 3-0 in the shootout of the semi-final match and this match also went to the shootout. New Zealand scored in the first attempt while India failed, increasing the pressure on the team. Leading India here, captain Swetha Punia blocked New Zealand’s next four tries, while Sonika and Navneet scored a goal apiece to give India a 2-1 win.
