Sharjah, September 4 (SO News / Agency) Sri Lanka defeated Afghanistan by four wickets in the Asia Cup 2022 thanks to the brilliant innings of Kaushal Mendes (36) and Danushka Guntilka (33). Afghanistan beat Sri Lanka by 20. Set a target of 176 runs in the overs, he achieved it with five balls to spare and won the first Super 4 match.
Sri Lanka gave an excellent example of team performance in this win. No Sri Lankan batsman scored a half-century in the chase, but short but valuable innings by Mendes, Gantilaka, Patham Nissanka (35) and Bhanuka Rajapakse (33) helped the team to victory.
Sri Lanka won the toss and invited Afghanistan to bat first and opener Hazratullah Zazai returned to the pavilion after scoring 13 runs. Garbaz and Ibrahim then put on a 93-run partnership for the second wicket. Garbaz hit four fours and sixes in his innings of 84 runs off 45 balls while Ibrahim Zadran scored 40 (38) runs.
Afghanistan’s run came to a halt after Garbaz fell in the 16th over and Ibrahim in the 18th over. The 19th over of the innings was disappointing for Afghanistan where they lost the wickets of captain Mohammad Nabi (01) and Najeebullah Zadran (17) for just three runs. Rashid Khan scored nine runs in the last over to take his team to 176 runs in 20 overs.
For Sri Lanka, Dilshan Madhushanka took two wickets for 37 runs in four overs while Mahesh Takshana and Asita Fernando took one wicket each. Wanindu Hasringa bowled well and conceded 23 runs in four overs but did not get a wicket. Chasing a target of 176, the Sri Lankan openers gave the team a good start and added 62 runs for the first wicket. Patham Nissanka scored 35 off 28 balls while Kosalmendis scored 36 off 19 balls.
Sri Lanka scored 82 runs for the loss of two wickets in the allotted 10 overs. Afghanistan captain Nabi tried to pressure Sri Lanka by taking the wicket of Charat Aslanka (08) in the 12th over and Mujibur Rahman in the 15th over, but the lower order of Shanaka’s team could not lose. Still chasing the target, Rajapaksa and Guntilka added 32 runs in 15 balls for the fifth wicket which brought their team close to victory. Venundu Hasringa (16), who came to the crease as Guntelka was dismissed, opened the innings by hitting a boundary off Rashid Khan. Rajapakse’s wicket fell when Sri Lanka needed two runs to win, but Chamika Karunaratne struck a boundary off the first ball of the 20th over to seal victory.
