Syria: 73 dead, 20 rescued after boat carrying refugees sinks

Syria, September 24 (SO News/Agency) At least 73 people have died after a boat capsized near the Syrian coast. The Minister of Health of Syria gave information in this regard to the media. Health Minister Hassan Algbash said in a statement on Friday that people who were rescued after the boat capsized were being treated at Al-Basil Hospital in the Syrian coastal city of Tartus.

“The boat was carrying illegal migrants from Lebanon to unknown destinations on Tuesday,” said Samir Kobrosli, the Syrian general director of the sea port, citing testimony from people rescued on Friday. Kobrosli says 31 bodies were recovered on Friday during a search and rescue operation launched by Syrian officials.

Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, quoted sources as saying on Friday that the actual capacity of the boat was only 30 people, but there were 100 to 150 people on board. According to the Lebanese Minister of Public Works and Transport, Ali Hamieh, 5 Lebanese, 12 Syrians and 3 Palestinians are among the 20 rescued refugees.
